My
Services
As a senior consultant obstetrician
and gynaecologist, I welcome and can provide for virtually all of the more
difficult cases. These include:
OBSTETRICS:
Women having babies
later in the reproductive life (over 35)
This is a special area of interest.
Diabetes in pregnancy
For over twenty years I have
cared for a great number of women with this problem.
Those wanting a gentle birth
As a founding obstetrician at
the Birth Centre, Royal Hospital for Women Sydney,
I have lectured internationally about this. It applies, of course, to all types
of birth.
Those who have miscarried
I have lectured and run
workshops at The Royal hospital for Women on miscarriage, especially dealing
with the causes fears and regrets.
Those who know little about having babies and want to learn more through parent
education
In conjunction with the
Children education Centre I have made many teaching videos.
Caesarean section
At the Royal Hospital for
Women I have given over 50 lectures to parents on how to have a baby safely and
successfully.
Those who have had difficulty getting and
staying pregnant or who have lost children:
As a member of the infertility team of The Royal Hospital for Women for many
years, a great deal of experience has been built up in relation to twins and the
special worries and problems of this group.
Family-centred birth:
Husband, partners, grandparents and children's involvement is essential and
I have lectured nationally and have taken a special interest in this area.
'Everything went wrong last time':
Review and repair caringly done. Time is made available e.g. the last
consultation of the day. It is not a perfect world.
Those born in Asia:
For 15 years I ran the outpatient department and antenatal clinic at the
Royal Hospital for Women where the vast majority were Chinese or from adjacent
countries.
Students:
I am still a very active teacher
GYNAECOLOGY
All general gynaecology i.e.
Problems specific to women but in particular:
Prolapse
As a member of
the Australian Association of Vaginal and Incontinence Surgeons (AAVIS).
The newer techniques of
minimally invasive and therefore minimally
disturbing surgery are available.
Ultrasound
As a member of the Australian Society in
Ultrasound in Medicine it is possible to have an ultrasound done in my main
office. A full bladder helps.
Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery
As a member of the Australian Gynaecological
Endoscopic Society this is available for common gynaecological problems.
Infertility and problems of getting a live baby
For many years a (Foundation) member of The
Royal Hospital for Women Infertility Group.
Menopause and hormones
When the Royal
Hospital for Women Menopause Group was set up over twenty years ago I was one of
the two initial practising foundation gynaecologists and have maintained an
interest in this area since then.
Microsurgery
Special courses have been taken
Colposcopy and positive pap smears
Special course undertaken and this is available
as a consulting room procedure.
Polycystic ovaries
An area of special interest, particularly those
with problems of acne; extra body hair; diabetes and obesity; irregular long
periods or none at all; miscarriage and inability to conceive.
Endometriosis
Help and assessment is available particularly
where pain, infertility and menstrual disturbance are factors.
Menstrual Problems
Preferably the more simple methods of
controlling heavy and frequent or painful periods are used, thus avoiding major
surgery. This is done by using hormonal methods, hysteroscopy and laporoscopy;
endometric ablation; progesterone implants; progesterone loaded IUCD (Mirena)
etc. This is particularly important for those wishing to avoid hysterectomy.
Well-women checks and prevention of problems
This of course is the better course of action.
This involves general check up, a pap smear and breast examination for example.
Contraception both permanent and temporary
This includes the pill and its problems close
up, tubal ligation and Billings family planning for example.
Infections
Particularly troublesome fungal infections;
Candida (monilia). Also Chlamydia and bacteria such as (Beta Hemolytic)
streptococcus, having done research on this topic at Cambridge
University.
Tumors
Ovarian cysts and pelvic masses arising out of
the pelvis there assessment and relevance ascertained.
